Overview

  • drmr package: got authors approval to submit the current version of the paper. Package documentation available here.

  • In the last meeting, we briefly talked about data availability and key environmental drivers to study Mackerel’s distribution.

  • A lot of time spent looking for the data and processing it.

  • The data from the survey we identified as the most approprate is “sparsely available”.

Survey Distribution Start Age structure
IESSNS Summer feeding 2010 Age and size composition (Age 3+)
BTS Overwinter 1965 Age-0 abundance index
Egg Survey Spawning 1992 No age structure

IESSNS data

  • Previous papers using IESSNS data [e.g.; Ono et al. (2024)] mention the data is available from the Planning Group on Northeast Atlantic Pelagic Ecosystem Surveys (PGNAPES)

  • I could not find that data on the ICES portal.

  • I connectect with Anna Heiða Ólafsdóttir, she pointed that the PGNAPES data is not publicly available. Some of it is available through a hard to find ICES portal.

Incorporating BT

ICES “rectangles”

CPUE (across all surveys) over time

Next Steps & Questions

  • More data processing :(

  • Although the spatiotemporal coverage we have is challenging, these are the circumstanes where model-based approaches (e.g., DRM) “shine”

  • For the models, I need to be careful and think about how to incorporate the information from the different surveys (suggestions welcome)

  • What spatial resolution would be best for the translational tools and economical risk part of the project?

  • Is the main goal to quantify range shifts or are we aiming at forecasting abundance / Biomass?
